Modern IDW

Star Wars Micro Comics

In November 2015, IDW Publishing introduced a new format for Star Wars comic collectors, 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" micro comics.  IDW pioneered this format in October 2014 with My Little Pony micro comics.  Each Star Wars Micro Comic Collector Pack includes: 1 micro comic, 1 3D poster, 1 pair of 3D glasses, and 1 trading card.  These packs come 24 to a box and can be found at mass retailers as well as comic shops.  If you are only interested in the comics, it is easy to see the issue number through the Star Wars logo on the pack.

There are 6 different comics in these packs reprinting Marvel Star Wars #1 - 6.  The cover and interior pages are based on the remastered (recolored) hardcover version of the movie adaptation that Marvel published in early 2015.  The cover stock is thick and glossy and the interior pages are printed on quality paper.

The back of the micro comics are mostly black with a drawing of Darth Vader's head taken from a panel in Star Wars #4 where Darth Vader is poking at Obi-Wan Kenobi's empty cloak.  At the bottom of the back are the logo's of the companies involved: Disney, Lucasfilm, Marvel, and IDW.

There are 6 3D posters, each showing the cover of the micro comic inside the pack which can be viewed with the accompanying 3D glasses.  The posters are folded in quarters to fit inside the pack.

Everything is high quality inside the pack except the trading cards.  They are a throwback to the trading cards of the 1980s and earlier with boarders around the picture and only the front side glossed.  The front of the cards contain a drawing from the interior of the comics while the back is a puzzle piece for the covers of Star Wars #1 - 4.  Collation inside a box is extremely poor with many, many duplicates.  As an example, I bought 12 packs from a box and ended up with only 6 different trading cards with 4 of the same trading card.  As you can imagine, with 36 trading cards to collect, it is going to take quite a few of these packs, which retail for $3.99, to complete a collection.
