Retro Marvel

Star Wars #1

Marvel Comics Star Wars #1 has a cover date of July 1977 but went on sale in mid April 1977, over a month before the movie was released.  Sales of the first issue were decent, but once the movie came out, the demand was so great for this comic book, Marvel went back to print several times in several different formats.[1]  The various formats together sold over a million copies making those pages from that first issue one of the best selling comics in the 1970s.  Star Wars is credited with saving Marvel Comics financially and provided a boost to the comic industry which was greatly needed.[2]

Over the years, the pages in Star Wars #1 have to be some of the most printed pages in any comic from any U.S. publisher.  Versions have been printed around the world (in many languages) in various formats and those pages are still being printed to this day!  In fact, Marvel is printing two hardcover books in 2015 with the pages from Star Wars #1 - Star Wars: The Original Marvel Years in Omnibus format (January 2015) and the remastered (i.e. recolored) Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (March 2015.)
