Modern IDW

Star Wars Micro Comics (3rd Set)

In December 2016, IDW Publishing released their 3rd Star Wars micro comics set, this time focused on comics released by Marvel since they reacquired the license in 2015.  Each Star Wars Micro Comic Collector Pack includes: 1 micro comic, 1 poster, 1 sticker sheet, and 1 jumbo card.  They retail for $3.99.  These packs come 24 to a box.

The packs are completely redesigned from the previous sets.  Rather than hide the comic, you can see which comic is included, making this new design superior to the previous packs.  The 6 micro comics are: Star Wars #1, Star Wars #7, Darth Vader #1, Princess Leia #1, Lando #1, and Chewbacca #1.

The 6 micro comics have a thick cover stock like the previous micro comics, but they are matte instead of glossy.  I actually prefer the flat look compared to the glossy covers.

In addition to 6 micro comics, there are also 6 posters, 6 sticker sheets, and 6 jumbo cards in the set; presumably if you bought the 6 different comics, you could also receive all 6 of the other items.  I have not had an opportunity to opened all the packs in the box I received to know if each pack of a particular comic contains the same content.

The posters are 4 times the size of the comics and are not 3D.  The back of the posters shows all the content that can be found in packs.

The sticker sheets are the same size as the comics.  Each sticker sheet comes with 2 stickers.  These sticker sheets are replacing the 3D glasses needed for the 3D posters found in the previous 2 sets.

The only disappointment with these packs is the same as the other 2 sets, the trading cards.  Rather than normal sized trading cards like the first 2 sets, this set has jumbo cards!  That sounds great, until you learn they are part of the thin cardboard inside the pack that hold the comic and other content.  The cardboard is perforated, making removing the trading card simple, but I would have preferred a standalone trading card.

I presume that IDW decided not to release the Return of the Jedi micro comics that were advertised as coming in July 2016 in The Empire Strikes Back set.  I am guessing with only 4 issues and Marvel probably eager to see micro comics of their new Star Wars line (after all, these comics help advertise Marvel's trade paperbacks), the plans for that set were abandoned.

These micro comic packs have not shown up at Phoenix, Arizona retail stores like Target to my knowledge.  I received the box I pre-ordered from Discount Comic Book Service (DCBS) last month and several have shown up on eBay.  I hope they do reach retail stores and sell well for IDW, as I'm looking forward to seeing more of these micro comics.  The new packaging and content is an improvement over the first 2 sets and I believe IDW has a winning formula with this 3rd set.
