Retro Dark Horse: Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Gold Foil Set

The Score Board, Inc. is a sports and entertainment memorabilia distributor that started in the late 1980s.  At first, the company was in the business of buying baseball cards in bulk from the trading card producers and repackaging them in sets for sale to retailer stores.  At the time, the sports card hobby was extremely popular.  The company quickly branched out into autographs and other sports memorabilia.  In the early 1990s, they created the wholly owned subsidiary, Catch a Star Collectibles, which concentrated on entertainment memorabilia, including properties like Star Trek and Star Wars.

In 1994, Dark Horse published a limited edition Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi 5-issue mini-series for Catch a Star Collectibles.  Outside of changes to the covers, the comics are the same as the standard issues published by Dark Horse.  In addition to an embossed gold foil title, the price box was replaced with a box that simply says Special Edition.  Only 7500 sets were produced.

I believe the majority of these sets were sold through QVC.  The set I obtained came in a sealed QVC box.  In the mid 1990s, QVC would have Star Wars specials from time to time and limited edition memorabilia like these comics were featured.

For many years, this set along with sets for Dark Empire and Dark Empire II sold for $15 - 25 on eBay.  In the past couple of years, these sets have risen in value, although the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi set is the cheapest of them to acquire.
